Jim Carpenter taught high-school English for 12 years before joining the world of application design, where he held a series of positions in both application development and management for more than 20 years. During that time he, along with two partners, founded, expanded, and sold a company that developed software products for the election industry. He then worked as an independent software-development consultant. He later joined the affiliated faculty at The Wharton School, where he still teaches computer programming and software engineering. Jim's motorcycle's name is Gus.
